John
Becker is one of North Carolina’s premier portrait painters. He was born
and raised in England, and from a very early age developed a keen interest
in art. He studied at two of England’s finest schools, Wellesley House and
Charterhouse. He then spent thirteen years in the theater, traveling all
over the world with an international repertory company as actor, director
and producer, with extensive experience in scenery design.
Since
becoming a United States citizen in the 1960s, he has studied oil painting
from the model at the Art Students League in New York under David Leffel, and with William Woodward of George Washington University. He has studied portraiture with world renowned portrait
painters Daniel Greene and John Howard Sanden. He also studied watercolor landscape painting with Ralph Smith and portraits with Charles Reid. His extensive art library, and his
attendance and careful study of all the major art exhibitions of recent years in Washington, D.C., Boston, New York, Richmond and Baltimore has reinforced his evolution as a serious painter.
The artists who have influenced him the most profoundly in developing his painting style are John Singer Sargent, Ingres, Sorolla, and Velazquez.
He is a member of The American Society of Portrait Artists.
He says
“portrait painting is an exciting challenge because of its inherent demands
to produce a work of art while creating a true representation of the
subject's character and appearance”.
Many of his portraits hang in the homes,
offices and courthouses of the Eastern United States, painted over the
thirty plus years he has lived in Edenton, NC. His wife Carol is a North
Carolinian and a fellow painter in oils and watercolors. She is a valued
resource who plays an important advisory role in the design and execution
stages of the development of his portraits. Her animal and landscape paintings can be seen at her own website at:
